  • Three Days, Thousands of Lives: How Gammadda United a Nation in Care

Three Days, Thousands of Lives: How Gammadda United a Nation in Care

COLOMBO (News 1st); With renewed hope, compassion, and a firm belief in rising together, a powerful movement of care swept across Sri Lanka’s hill country this January—rekindling strength in communities still bearing the scars of hardship.

Driven by the mission of restoring dignity and rebuilding lives, the Gammadda Care & Dare Operation, supported by the Minderoo Foundation of Australia, one of the world’s largest philanthropic organizations, launched its journey on January 10 from Kotmale, standing shoulder to shoulder with the people in their path toward recovery.

The second phase of the Gammadda Care & Dare initiative unfolded over three days beginning January 24, centering on the Badulla District, bringing essential services, relief, and renewed hope directly to affected communities.

The programme commenced on January 24 at Passara Central College, where people from surrounding areas gathered with faith and anticipation.

Throughout the day, families were able to access a wide spectrum of vital services, all under one roof.

Legal assistance, national identity documentation services, support for replacing lost documents, vocational guidance, psychological counselling, and distributions of essential food items were provided seamlessly through the familiar, trusted structure of Gammadda’s ten-service-zone model.

A healthcare zone, operating with the support of the Ministry of Health and the Sri Lanka Air Force, delivered medical services to those in need. Special focus was given to pregnant mothers and young children, with nutrition packs distributed to safeguard maternal and child wellbeing.

Separate zones ensured the dignified distribution of hygiene kits for both women and men, while families impacted by disasters received essential dry rations, household equipment, water filtration units, and gas cookers, practical tools to restore normalcy to everyday life.

A notable feature of the day was the legal services zone, established with the collaboration of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka, offering guidance and relief to those navigating legal uncertainties. In parallel, a dedicated documentation zone assisted citizens with certificates, official records, and identity cards.

Standing firmly alongside the rebuilding effort, the National Apprenticeship and Industrial Training Authority (NAITA) joined hands with the initiative, offering career guidance and vocational pathways, helping people look beyond survival and toward sustainable livelihoods.

On January 25, the Care & Dare mission moved to Madolsima Tamil Maha Vidyalaya, where the third programme of the phase was conducted from morning to evening with equal intensity and compassion.

Once again, people accessed legal services, documentation support, psychological counselling, vocational guidance, healthcare, and essential food assistance, all provided in a single, welcoming space.

Health services, supported by the Ministry of Health and the Air Force, continued uninterrupted. Nutrition packs reached expectant mothers and children, hygiene kits were distributed to both men and women, and families affected by adversity received dry food rations, household goods, water filters, and gas stoves essential for daily living.

Legal aid and document services remained a critical pillar of the Madolsima camp, ensuring that no citizen was left unheard or undocumented. NAITA once again extended its support, empowering individuals with career guidance to help rebuild futures weakened by crisis.

The three-day effort concluded successfully on January 26 at the Welimada Diwurumpola Purana Rajamaha Viharaya, a place of deep spiritual significance, perfectly reflecting the programme’s essence of healing, unity, and renewal.

Here too, the people were offered legal advice, identity and documentation services, vocational guidance, psychological support, and essential food supplies, along with comprehensive healthcare services delivered in collaboration with national institutions.

Nutrition packs for pregnant women and young children, hygiene kits, disaster-relief dry rations, household appliances, water filtration systems, and gas cookers were distributed throughout the day—touching lives with care rooted in respect.

Legal services supported by the Bar Association of Sri Lanka and dedicated document assistance zones once again ensured justice, dignity, and continuity for citizens rebuilding their lives. NAITA’s presence reaffirmed a shared promise: that recovery must also lead to opportunity.

This was not merely a relief operation. It was a reminder.

    That we must be strong.
That pain can remain in the past.
That together, we can rise again.
    We survive together.
    We stand together.
    We rise together.
Gammadda. With the people. For the people.

Gammadda Launches Care and Dare Phase to Turn Relief into Rebuilding : First Community Camp tomorrow, in Kotmale

COLOMBO (News 1st); As Sri Lanka continues to recover from the devastating impact of Cyclone Ditwah, the Gammadda Movement has announced the launch of a new phase of its response — ‘Recover and Rebuild: Care & Dare’ — aimed at bridging immediate humanitarian relief with longer-term rebuilding and recovery.

This next phase is being carried out with the support of the Australia-based Minderoo Foundation, whose AU$1 million commitment has enabled Gammadda to scale its disaster response beyond emergency aid, toward sustained community recovery.

The ‘Care & Dare’ phase reflects a carefully chosen theme — continuing care for communities still in distress, while daring to support rebuilding efforts as families attempt to restore normalcy after the disaster.

The programme will roll out through 10 on-location community camps over the coming weeks. The first camp is scheduled for Saturday, January 10, in Kotmale, one of the areas severely affected by the cyclone.

Each camp will combine continued emergency relief with essential recovery-oriented services, including:

Distribution of emergency food and relief items

    Medical and public health services

Emergency legal assistance for documentation and claims

    Educational support for affected children

Vocational and skills-training opportunities to help restore livelihoods

The initiative is being implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Health, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) and the Emergency Relief Centre, alongside professional and institutional partners such as the Sri Lanka Bar Association, NAITA – National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority, the Divisional Secretariat of Kotmale, and volunteer teams from V-Force.

Chevaan Daniel, the Leader of the Gammadda Movement noted that the objective of ‘Care & Dare’ is to move beyond short-term relief, “…addressing the deeper social, economic and institutional challenges communities face in the aftermath of a large-scale disaster”.

The support of the Minderoo Foundation, one of Australia’s leading philanthropic organisations, marks a significant international partnership for Gammadda, reinforcing confidence in its community-driven model and enabling a more comprehensive recovery response following Cyclone Ditwah.

As Sri Lanka transitions from crisis response to recovery, the ‘Care & Dare’ phase seeks to ensure that affected communities are not only assisted, but empowered — with dignity, skills and support to rebuild their lives.

  • Australia’s Minderoo Foundation Commits AU$1 Million to Gammadda’s Flood Relief Effort in Sri Lanka

Australia’s Minderoo Foundation Commits AU$1 Million to Gammadda’s Flood Relief Effort in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO (News 1st); Australian philanthropy, Minderoo Foundation, has committed AU$1 million to The Gammadda Movement to support life-saving relief and early recovery efforts for communities devastated by Cyclone Ditwah in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka is facing the aftermath of its worst natural disaster in decades, with Cyclone Ditwah triggering widespread flash floods and landslides after making landfall in late November. Scores have lost their lives and millions remain affected. Thousands of families are displaced in emergency centres, thousands of homes have been damaged or destroyed, and critical bridges and transport routes have been washed away, cutting off already vulnerable communities. And all of this, on the back of one of the worst economic periods in its post-independence history.

Against this backdrop, Gammadda – working with The Sirasa–Shakthi Sahana Yathra and a nationwide network of volunteers – has mobilised an unprecedented response, turning media platforms, collection centres and partner networks into a multi-pronged relief effort delivering aid by land, water and air to marooned families across the island.

This partnership with Minderoo Foundation will significantly scale up Gammadda’s ability to meet immediate humanitarian needs, including:

Emergency food, clean drinking water and essential non-food items such as sanitation

Medical and hygiene supplies to prevent secondary health crises

Rapid support to restore safe shelter and basic community infrastructure in the hardest-hit districts.

Minderoo Foundation is a proudly Australian philanthropy that works to “forge a fair future” by challenging inequality and responding to urgent global challenges. Its work spans thriving communities, gender equality, and protecting natural ecosystems, with a dedicated “Impact Missions” team that supports agile response to crises.

Minderoo has already committed substantial resources to reducing the devastation caused by climate and conflict driven disasters in Ukraine Gaza, Syria, Lebanon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan and Papua New Guinea. The partnership with Gammadda extends this mission into South Asia at a moment of acute need.

“Our role as a philanthropy is to focus on where our support will make the greatest difference. By backing trusted local partners like Gammadda and directing resources straight to communities, we help ensure people have the agency, dignity and certainty they need to lead their own recovery,” said John Hartman, Minderoo Foundation CEO.

“We are ever so grateful to Dr. Andrew Forrest and Nicola Forrest for their generosity at this crucial time. Sri Lanka only seeks support to stand up once again, so we can regain our journey towards our fullest potential. The partnership with Minderoo Foundation will help us get there. It is a true reflection of the heart of this incredible organization”, noted Chevaan Daniel, the Leader of the Gammadda Movement.

The collaboration between Minderoo Foundation and Gammadda aims to ensure that no community is left behind, matching the generosity of the Sri Lankan public with global partnership and long-term commitment.
